Review: HEADED FOR TROUBLE: McKay #1 by Shiloh Walker

Headed for Trouble blog post

Shiloh Walker has once again pulled me into her world as she weaved a tale that just wouldn't let me go! Headed for Trouble is one of those books that even once I hit “THE END” I can't stop thinking about it. I'm so drawn into the plot and characters that I can't wait to see where the next book is going to take us.

Neve and Ian both have histories that continue to haunt them, and they both are determined to overcome them. I loved the chemistry between them and their will to fight for themselves and each other. Their relationship was fast-paced and very hot. They get the opportunity to confront their past, but at what cost? I'm not telling...sometimes you just have to read the book! lol

McCay's Treasure, Mississippi is a quaint small town filled with characters that are well-written and keep you interested. There is a lot of family and small town drama that, while some of it seems petty, other things you know go much deeper and I want to unravel it all.

Headed for Trouble isn't a cliffhanger, yet there is still a mystery that needs to be solved and I canNOT wait for Trouble with Temptation...also the plot is on of my favorite themes, but I won't spoil that for you!

First in an all-new trilogy!

Headed For TroubleSHE'S A SMALL-TOWN GIRL WITH BIG DREAMS.

Nine years ago, Neve McKay fled her small Southern town and disapproving family to seek a career in the big city. Now she's finally coming home - and hoping for a fresh start. But the relationship that shattered her world still haunts her. And even among her nearest and dearest, she doesn't feel safe.

CAN THIS BAD BOY BE THE ANSWER TO HER PRAYERS?

Ian Campbell is a pure Scottish muscle - as hard and handsome as they come. But when Neve walks into his bar, his heart melts . . . and he vows to have this gorgeous and somewhat vulnerable woman in his life - for better or for worse. What is Neve's tragic secret? And how can Neve expect Ian to protect her, when doing so could put his own life at risk? The only thing Ian knows for sure is that he will do whatever it takes to keep her out of harm's way - and in his loving arms.

 Book #1 in The McKay's
Release date December 29, 2015
Excerpt from Headed for Trouble:

“You might as well quit the flirting. We both know you changed your mind.”

“And who said I changed my mind?” he asked, looking put out. He crossed his arms over his chest.

“You did.” She gave a lazy shrug. “I saw it on your face, clear as day.” The look on his face was a challenge, but she couldn’t let herself meet it, even if she could find that part of herself that would want to.

Because she wasn’t sure she trusted herself, she sat down on the dock and dangled her legs over the edge, staring down into the dark water. Under the trees, it was almost cool here. Almost. Not quite. “You’ve been here for a little while—a few months or more, at least, I’m going to assume. So you’ve probably heard a few rumors, and I can’t say I blame you for deciding I’m more trouble than I’m worth.”

Boards creaked under him as he sat down next to her.

From the corner of her eye, she could see the way faded denim stretched over hard thighs, denim so worn it was going white at the seams. His T-shirt bore the logo for Manchester United and it was almost as faded as the denim. It would be soft against his skin, she thought. And under it, his skin would be incredibly hard and warm.

She wanted to curl her hands into his shirt, straddle his thighs, and rub herself against him. And she wanted to yell at him for making her think she could maybe have the small promise of oblivion with him.

You’ve lost your mind.

All this time with a nonexistent libido and now it was going haywire on her. To make matters worse, it wasn’t even lust driving her now. She’d known that from the sucker punch of pain that had hit her when the heat in Ian’s eyes had cooled, the moment he’d realized who she was.

“I’ve never been one to put much stock in rumors, Neve McKay,” he said softly.

“Really.” Turning her head, she studied him. “So the hot-to-cold act was all because you figured out I’m Brannon’s little sister? Then why are you running warm again? I’m still his sister.”

A pained look crossed his face. “You aren’t one for the easy way, are you?”

“Are you kidding?” She laughed bitterly. “I love the easy way. But the easy way hates me. I figured that out ages ago. Besides, life isn’t easy.”

Ian leaned forward, elbows braced on his knees. “Brannon, he’s one of my best friends. Has been since university. We met in London and it was like we’d known each other our whole lives.” His voice was distant now as he gazed into the water. “Like a brother, he is.”

Now he looked up and met her gaze. “I take issue when people hurt those I care about,” he said. “And . . . ”

She stiffened. Curling her hands around the boards, she focused on the far side of the bank. “Well, I’ll give you points for the loyalty you show your friends then.” She forced her fingers to unclench from the boards and went to stand.

“It’s not just that.” He caught her wrist before she could rise.

It was instinct that had her jerking back, instinct that had her pulse stopping than accelerating in fear.

It didn’t go unnoticed by Ian, either, damn him.

Although he said nothing, he let go.

She managed to rise to her feet in a slow, unhurried motion. “Look, it doesn’t matter. You’re Brannon’s friend and it’s not a secret that I’ve got some fences to mend when it comes to my family.” She gave him an easy smile and an easy shrug before she turned and headed down the dock. “But it’s probably wiser all around if you just stop this . . . whatever this is. The hot-and-cold thing gets old and I—”

The words froze in her throat as she turned and found him just a foot away.

Whoa. He was quiet. Big. Sexy. Quiet.

And he watched her with eyes that saw a lot deeper than she liked.

“The problem with stopping the hot-and-cold thing is that there is no cold.” He lifted a hand and caught one of her curls, twining it around his finger. His gaze, dark and seductive, richer than melted chocolate, held hers. “I look at you and feel nothing but fire.” in me, Neve. I think you know it, too. Now if it was just fire, then it wouldn’t be such a problem. Fire is all well and good, but it’s easy . . . and sometimes over in a flash. But this . . . ” He moved a hand between them. “I don’t think it’s just fire. You feel it, too. That’s why you’re so nervous. That’s why you’re so afraid.”

Her heart knocked up against her ribs.

“Well. Aren’t you arrogant?” she said, surprising herself with how steady her voice sounded.

“Is it arrogance when we both know I’m right?”

He took another step, taking away a few of those precious inches between them, twining a bit more of her hair around his finger. She had to tilt her head back now to hold his gaze.

“I made a misstep when I let things I didn’t understand influence any decision I made,” he murmured, his eyes falling from hers now.

He was rubbing her hair, his thumb stroking back and forth over the curl he was toying with.

She could just barely see it but the action was oddly mesmerizing.

“There are, after all, two sides to every story, aren’t there?”

Now his gaze lifted back to hers.

Swallowing, Neve tried for a snide tone as she asked, “Oh, is this where you ask me to explain my side of what happened?”

“No. This is where I kiss you.”

If he’d given her any more warning, she might have been able to . . . to . . .

Oh, hell. Neve couldn’t have done anything. Anything but grab at his shoulders and hold on tight.

Review: DARKER THAN DESIRE book #3 Secrets and Shadows series by Shiloh Walker

***NOTE: Please know that this is a series you NEED to read in order or you will be hopelessly lost with the events that finally culminate in this book. There are so many players, clues, incidences, and circumstances that shape and create the main characters and that intertwine with the plot.  If you haven't read the previous books, be warned that this review has major spoilers for the series, but not for THIS book...there is still a lot left for you to discover.

Click here for the list of books and the order they need to be read.

As a child, David Sutter's soul was shattered, but his spirit wasn't broken. The Cronus Club did it's best to reign him in, but to no avail. While he was able to escape the physical monsters that plagued him, he had a long way to go toward recovery. After 20 years, when he thought it was all done, evil begins to resurface, and he knows that it is time to come out of hiding. He faces the devils of his past, but it could drag him down further, as people he cares about are being murdered, along with members of the diabolical cult. One woman has the power to keep him from falling into the depths of his darkness...

Sybil Chalmers has loved David for many years, but he keeps pushing her away. She will fight for him, but if he can't accept her love she knows that she will have to let him go.  With David's past coming back to haunt him and the entire town of Madison, IN in upheaval, can she make him see that he already holds the tools to destroy his darkness and rebuild his life...
***

This is a dark series that showcases characters rising above their demons and addictions, making it easier to find peace and happiness in their future. I was so excited when I discovered that Sybil and David/Cain got their HEA in Darker Than Desire. I adored Sybil, who refuses to take crap from anyone, making her a perfect heroine for David.  Cain is a character that intrigued me from the start and I wasn't surprised to learn that he was actually David Sutter, hiding in plain sight.  I knew there was more to the cold, standoffish, Amish fellow than met the eye and was curious to discover how intimate his connection was with Sybil.

David and Sybil have dynamic chemistry. Their passion sizzled, as their erotic interludes burned up the pages. Neither of them would back down when they had a point to get across to the other. Sometimes it worked for them, and other times they would just butt heads. David's stubbornness got in the way of their relationship more than once, but Sybil was just as determined to make him see that together they could conquer the demons.

I loved that Noah, Adam, Lana, Jensen, etc...were all still a big part of the story, as these are characters that I really got hooked on. I liked that it was shown how David was drawn to be part of a family with Sybil and her nephew, Drew, but he refused to acknowledge that it was what he really wanted.

I was shocked when I finally pieced together who the murder was. I knew early on who was killing the members of the Cronus Club, but the other murderer threw me.  I thought that the differences of insanity vs. evil was well described and played out through this series, and it was a great twist to this dark, emotional story.

What I've been reading...some quickie reviews

Jill Sorenson is a favorite romantic suspense author of mine. I absolutely loved both AFTERSHOCK and FREEFALL. In AFTERSHOCK you have the scenario of a catastrophic earthquake trapping EMTs, ordinary citizens, and a van of convicts into a small confined space.  Tragedy brings out the good in some people and the selfishness in others.  Throw in some romance and this is a rocking read that doesn't pause for a moment.  FREEFALL is connected, as we first met Sam in AFTERSHOCK, though he's mostly unconscious for the entire book, but it you will see how the experience shaped him for FREEFALL.  Jill is not afraid to touch dark, gritty subjects, without sugarcoating it all.  Bad things happen to good characters, and she has a knack for drawing me in emotionally.

Shiloh Walker is another favorite author of mine. WRECKED was a fun contemporary friends-to-lovers themed romance (I love that theme!)  Abby and Zach grew up in the spotlight together being childhood stars on a popular TV show.  Zach has loved her forever, Abby is only just now realizing how much he means to her.  While this book is more carefree that most of the other books Shiloh writes, she doesn't loose her emotional voice that I'm always looking for in her books. This book would be a great beach read...if you have all day to sit around on the beach, I couldn't put this book down and read it in one day!

I know. I know.  I've talked about SWEET REVENGE a few times here, but just in case you still don't know THIS IS A GREAT BOOK! So there.  Zoe Archer is another favorite author, I love her sense of adventure and the humor that comes out in her books. She always creates such unique characters which is a huge bonus! I love that she doesn't hesitate to give her hero/heroine a dark past, and not make them ashamed of it!

COVER REVEAL!!! J. C. Daniel's BROKEN BLADE

J.C. Daniels
Book 3 in J. C. Daniels Kit Colbana series comes out in January 2014, here's a little teaser:

Blurb…

Kit Colbana: assassin, thief, investigator extraordinaire. Now broken.

She always expected her past to catch up with her but never like this. Haunted by nightmares and stripped of her identity, she’s retreated to Wolf Haven, the no-man’s land where she found refuge years before. But while she might want to hide away from the rest of the world, the rest of the world isn’t taking the hint.

Dragged kicking and screaming back into life, Kit is thrust head-first into an investigation surrounding the theft of an ancient relic…one that she wants nothing to do with. Her instincts tell her it’s a bad idea to just leave the relic lying about, but finding it might be just as bad.

Forced to face her nightmares, she uncovers hidden strength and comes face to face with one of the world’s original monsters.
If she survives the job, she won’t be the same…and neither will those closest to her.

Excerpt:

I knew the weight of a weapon in my hand.

Even at sixteen, broken, battered and bloodied. I knew what it was to hold a weapon and realize that I had to fight or be destroyed.

Those last moments were nothing but a blur, but it was a blur of silver and blade and blood.

I left the guards dead in the snow, taking their packs and fleeing into the night, certain my grandmother would seek me out. And all the while as I ran, the blade had whispered to me. I am here now. I am here…

Reaching out, I touched her hilt and drew her from the sheath and stared at the gleaming, liquid length of silver.

"You're not here now."

If ever there had been a time when I needed her, it had been when I was trapped up on that mountain. Broken, desperate.

But she hadn't answered my call.

And she couldn't come to my hand now, either.

Stroking my fingers down the blade, I closed my eyes…and wished.

Then I turned back to my weapons trunk and went about getting myself ready.

Just what did you take to the party when you were dealing with some ancient, psychotic evil who unleashed holy hell just for the fun of it?

Bound Temptations by Shiloh Walker

I read each of these books when they first came out and really enjoyed them.  I think it's time to do a re-read! :)

First time in print…previously only available in digital format.

Bound Temptations: Stories of Temptation and Submission

Tempt Me

She’s a temptation he can’t resist…
Roxanne ‘Rocki’ Monroe’s life is full of secrets and hidden heartaches. Cole Stanton would love to heal her pain and chase away the ghosts of her past, but she’s just a complication he doesn’t have room for in his life.
Or so he thinks. It doesn’t take Cole long to realize he’s more than willing to let temptation get the best of him, more than happy to deal with complications if that’s what it takes to get her. What he has and what he needs are two different things…and what he needs is Rocki.

Beg Me

Beg me…there had been a time when those words made her burn with desire. But now, there was only fear. Once, Tania Sinclair’s life was almost perfect…But a couple of tragedies later, she’s barely holding it together. A car accident took away her husband, and an attack from somebody she should have been able to trust has shaken not only her confidence, but it’s also stripped away her fantasies and even made it painful to look back on her memories of her husband without fear.
Two years after her attack, Tania is determined to take her life back and the first step is taking back herself…her fantasies, her dreams, her memories. There’s only one person she can trust to do it, too. One person she wants enough…Drake Bennett, her husband’s best friend.

Warning: This book involves light bondage play, rape fantasy & role-playing. The acts between the hero & heroine are consensual, but they may not be ideal for all readers…

sneak peak of HUNTER'S RISE by Shiloh Walker

Snippet (warning... Toronto is something of a smart-ass)

Not the ideal place for a fight. He'd done it before and managed to avoid human casualties, but he suspected that Sylvia James was a different breed from what he was used to. Ferals fought to live, so they could kill—by nature, most of them weren't always clearheaded. Sylvia, like him, was a trained killer. She would be clearheaded. It would make a difference.

He hunted the ferals.

She hunted for money.

In the end, he'd win, because he was stronger.

But he didn't want to have to fight her. He wanted to have sex with her—down and dirty sex, maybe up against a wall, in the light so he could watch her. Then on a bed, her body under his, or over . . . his hands tangled in that dark, silken hair.

"You know, most men would at least bother to introduce themselves before the guy starts picturing the woman naked," she drawled, coming to a stop eighteen inches away.

Toronto smirked. "That's bullshit. We see a woman, we frequently picture them naked. We mess with the names when we want to actually think about getting them in bed. Some of us, at least." He skimmed a look over her body, taking in the sleek muscles, the powerhouse curves. Then he focused on her face again, smiled slowly. "So. What's your name?"

Review: IF YOU KNOW HER by Shiloh Walker

Ash trilogy #3
Suspense
Ballentine

A killer is still on the loose, but nobody knows it. The wrong man was pinned for the brutal death of Jolene Hollister, an evil man for sure, but not Joely's killer.

It's been six months since Nia Hollister's cousin was brutally murdered. A murder was brought to justice, but she can't find the closure she needs.

Law Reilly can't shake Nia from his mind. He knows that she has some serious issues dealing with the death of her cousin, and they still need to find the murderer.

Can they find the killer before he finds another victim?

*****
OMG... I finally know WHO DID IT!!!!! Shiloh Walker reeled this reader in and keep her attention for THREE whole books to find out who Jolene's killer really was. I had my suspicions but never nailed him down until this book. Of course there was lots of action, romance, and thrills to get to this point.

I really enjoyed Nia and Law's road to their Happily Ever After. They would butt heads, but Law could bring her down and around (usually). I loved their hunt for the killer. Law had to convince Nia that she couldn't just go off half-cocked following the trail of the murderer, though that was no easy task. Their fiery chemistry kept the pages steaming.

I met a lot of great characters that I'm in no way ready to let go of. Lena and Ezra tied the knot and Hope and Remy were moving forward in their relationship, it was so nice to see their progressions since the last book. There is one police officer, who was being extra friendly with a local waitress that I would love to see a book about. *wink wink nudge nudge*

I'm already anticipating Ms. Walker's next book as she so rarely disappoints me.

Review: IF YOU SEE HER by Shiloh Walker

Ash Trilogy #2
Romantic Suspense
Ballantine Books

IF YOU SEE HER picks up right where IF YOU HEAR HER left off, with Hope in the hospital accused of beating her best friend, Law, nearly to death with a baseball bat, and then attempting to kill herself. No one believes she is innocent.

Remy Jennings knows the situation doesn't feel right, but the evidence points to Hope's guilt. As he digs deeper into her past, he discovers this isn't her first brush with violence. But when he talks with her ex-husband, more questions are raised. Is she the mentally unstable woman he claims she is?

How can Hope prove she is a victim and not the perpetrator?

*****
If You See Her was an exciting continuation of Shiloh Walker's Ash trilogy. We still don't know who the killer is for If You Hear Her, but our suspects are adding up. Though in If You See Her the focus is mostly on Hope and who is terrorizing her.

Hope is a very private person, with good reason. Her ex-husband abused her, but because of his position in society, many turned a blind eye, and chose not to believe her. She took drastic measures to finally escape her marriage. But, it seems he's not done with her yet.

Now we have not one bad guy, but TWO. There is the obvious possessive anger from Hope's ex-husband, Joe. But there is also the more subtle yearnings of the killer we were introduced to in If You Hear Her.
I enjoyed Remy and Hope's new found relationship and their chemistry was fantastic. Hope was struggling to find her independence and I loved how Remy supported her, even when all he wanted to do was shelter her and protect her.

I loved all of the interactions between Ezra, Lena, and Law, who we met in If You Hear Her. The continued mystery who the real killer is frustrating, in a good way, because by the end of If You See her I was still wondering WHO he was. I had ideas, but still didn't know.

Review of THE DEPARTED by Shiloh Walker

FBI Psychics #2
Suspense/Paranormal (psychic...can talk to ghosts)
Berkley

When a ghost leads Desiree “Dez” Lincoln to French Lick, IN, the last person she expects to run into is her former boss (and lover), FBI Agent, Taylor Jones, who is just as surprised to see her. Having had a rather bad falling out, neither was prepared to run into the other, but there are much more important things to worry about than past disagreements.

As they unravel one plot, another mystery cries out to be solved. This one is much more personal. One that nearly broke Taylor as a teenager. One he has never healed from.

Can Dez discover who caused such pain and heal Taylor's heart in the process?

*****

While I really enjoyed THE DEPARTED, there was just one thing that hampered me from loving this book...but I'll get to that.

I loved Dez and Taylor. Dez wore her emotions more openly, while Taylor hid behind a cold veneer. It wasn't until Dez was gravely injured that Taylor started to acknowledge his feelings, but even then he was quick to revert back into his icy demeanor. He wasn't an easy man to understand until his past started to unravel. Dez was easier to read. I loved their chemistry and watching Taylor's emotions melt.

It was no big secret who the culprits were of the crime that brought Dez to French Lick. The question was how were they going to catch them, and prove what they had plotted. The real mystery, was what had happened to Taylor's little sister back when they were kids. Where did she go? Who took her? Nothing was ever found, but now a small ghostly voice started asking Dez to “Find Me.”As this little girl started to haunt Dez, she knew that she wouldn't find any peace until she discovered the girl's identity and what transpired the day she went missing. This was really gut wrenching, seeing Taylor relive the day his sister disappeared, and how he's tried to make up for never finding her by joining the FBI and being the best special agent he could be.

I really liked this book, and am looking forward to the next installment of the series...heck I look forward to EVERYTHING Shiloh Walker writes.

~*~*~*~*SPOILER*~*~*~*~

One thing really bothered me...and I blame this on bad editing. It was mentioned that there were six teenage boys originally involved in the kidnapping of the girl in the beginning of the story, Tristan, who was murdered for his reluctance to be involved—his ghost led Dez to French Lick. Then there was Mark, Beau, and Brandon, who were dealt with (quite well) in the story. BUT, here's were it gets a bit hairy, Kyle was mentioned as being cold and calculating, yet he just seemed to fall off the face of the Earth, and there was no punishment nor consequences for his actions. On page 177 Keith Sutter and Lee Gragon were mentioned as being not “as intristic to the group”. Now I thought that maybe Keith and Kyle were one and the same and this was just an “oopsie” not caught, but I felt that it was very inconsistent that Beau, Mark & Brandon were dealt with, but not Kyle (Keith?), who we KNEW played a part in the attempt of murder.
