Review of EAT, SLAY, LUZT by Jillian Stone

 From the cover:

Survival tip #1: When you’re caught in the middle of the zombie apocalypse, get a badass partner.

The zombie apocalypse is on, and Lizzy Davis is determined to survive any way she can. As a surgeon, she’s used to saving lives; not cutting into the basal ganglia to make sure the patient stays dead. When the refugee camp is overrun by zombie hordes, Lizzy manages to escape only to run into Black Hawk pilot Chris Oakley in the middle of the Syrian Desert.

Lizzy and Chris fight off zombie attacks as they make their way toward a joint military air base northeast of Kirkuk. Just one problem, they’ll have to pass through the drone-patrolled DMZ— Dead Meat Zone. To get there, they form uneasy alliances with French-Arab commandos and a black ops interrogator who’s slowly rotting before their eyes.

Along the way, Lizzy and Chris manage to find time for each other—the sizzling red-hot lovemaking kind of time. And who knows? They might have a chance at love if they live long enough.

Warning: Features red hot to erotic love scenes
******

I loved this book! It was a great take on zombies and the Apocalypse.

I loved the military feel and Lizzy and Chris were a great team fighting the zombies...and some survivors. Lizzy doesn't take any crap and is no weak, whimpering heroine. She kicks ass and isn't afraid to get her hands dirty.

I was saddened by one event in the story, but won't spoil it.  :P

The ending was very satisfying, and left enough of an opening that there could be more stories to tell in this world...maybe even expanding Lizzy and Chris's story.

***NOTE: I'm a huge fan of romance books and The Walking Dead (and Zombieland), this fully satisfied my fandom. :)

SINS OF THE HEART: Otherkin #1 by Eve Silver REVIEW & FLASH SALE

Sins of the Heart 0.99 cent Flash Sale!

Amazon | Kobo | Nook | iBooks
As the eldest son of Sutekh, Lord of Chaos (just one of a string of glorious titles), Dagan Krayl is the most feared soul reaper, gathering the wickedest souls for his father to consume.  When his youngest brother is brutally murdered, Dae is determined to find and destroy those responsible. He is also hoping to find his brother's remains to reanimate him.

Roxy Tam, an Asetian Guard of the Daughters of Aset, is set on protecting the innocent, also looking to discover who killed the soul reaper. She finds herself drawn to Dagan as she joins him on the quest to seek answers to his brothers death, uncovering a plot destine to cause war in the Underworld.

*****
Years ago Dagan saved Roxy, inadvertently changing  her life and creating a bond that pulls them together. I love the passion and determination each of them show for each other, and for what they believe in. The heat of desire between them keeps the pages smoldering, and the action-packed adventure they embark on to find the truth makes for a fast-paced story.
Roxy is reluctant to let go of her secrets and fears, but Dagan is able to draw her out, whether she likes if or not.

Eve Silver did an excellent job creating a world inhabited by gods, demons, humans, and everything in between.  She masterfully blended both Earthly and Underworld characters and scenes.  I was drawn into a whole new world that I cannot wait to further explore. There are still many answers I need.  I can't wait to see who and what is in store for Dagan's brothers or how everything will be resolved.

Review of BURN FOR ME: A Hidden Legacy Novel book 1 by Ilona Andrews

Publisher's Blurb:
#1 New York Times bestselling author Ilona Andrews launches a brand-new Hidden Legacy series, in which one woman must place her trust in a seductive, dangerous man who sets off an even more dangerous desire . . .
Nevada Baylor is faced with the most challenging case of her detective career—a suicide mission to bring in a suspect in a volatile situation. Nevada isn’t sure she has the chops. Her quarry is a Prime, the highest rank of magic user, who can set anyone and anything on fire.
Then she’s kidnapped by Connor “Mad” Rogan—a darkly tempting billionaire with equally devastating powers. Torn between wanting to run and wanting to surrender to their overwhelming attraction, Nevada must join forces with Rogan to stay alive.

Rogan’s after the same target, so he needs Nevada. But she’s getting under his skin, making him care about someone other than himself for a change. And, as Rogan has learned, love can be as perilous as death, especially in the magic world.

****

Ilona Andrews has created an extraordinary cast of characters set in an action-packed world of magic. I was sucked into the story from page one and had difficulty putting the book down.

Nevada Baylor is the head of Baylor Investigative Agency, her family owned business. The entire Baylor family is very entertaining and I really enjoyed the banter between the family. Nevada's extremely witty in her interactions with all of the characters, though not in a slap-stick way. I loved her attitude and that she didn't waiver from her beliefs and moral code. Her powers are unique, and she is only now learning how to tap into her magic.

Mad Rogan is an excellent counterpart for Nevada. There is a depth to him that is barely touched upon that really needs to be explored. There is an undeniable chemistry between them that I am really looking forward to watching grow and develop. And I can't wait until they fulfil their passion...Mad is ready, but Nevada is hesitant with very good reason.

I loved watching Nevada and Mad battle the evil that is trying to destroy their world. They had a few kinks to work out, but once they set their minds to it, they worked brilliantly together combating a power that seemed impossible to stop.

There is so much left unanswered that I am already looking forward to visiting this world and all of the characters again. Augustine Montgomery, Lenora Jordan, Bern, Grandma Frida are just a few of the other characters I want to see more of. I have a feeling that there will be quite a bit more evil to be combated, and none of the battles will be easy.

BURN FOR ME is one of those books that you just don't want to end...and really it doesn't since it's the first book of a series. Unfortunately, now I need to wait for the next book to come out to get more of Nevada and Mad!!! I hope the wait isn't too long. In the meantime I guess I'm just going to have to glom onto all of the previously released Ilona Andrews books since BURN FOR ME is the first book I've read by the husband and wife writing duo.

There was one small thing that bugged me. There is a paragraph in the book that talked about how Army MOSs (job classifications) transfer over into civilian life that really irked me. Most wouldn't be bothered by this, but, as both my husband and I are Army veterans, it annoyed me. To quote: “Anything in 68 category, medical, was good. Or 91B, wheeled vehicle mechanic. Eleven Bravo wasn't one of those MOSs. It was the backbone of the army, but in the civilian world, there wasn't much you could do with that.” I disagree with this. I know many 11B veterans, my husband included, whose experience and training in the military has translated well into the civilian world and are now in law enforcement, on security forces, or in other criminal justice jobs. Sorry for the mini-rant, but I hate that they get such a poor rap.

COVER REVEAL!!! J. C. Daniel's BROKEN BLADE

J.C. Daniels
Book 3 in J. C. Daniels Kit Colbana series comes out in January 2014, here's a little teaser:

Blurb…

Kit Colbana: assassin, thief, investigator extraordinaire. Now broken.

She always expected her past to catch up with her but never like this. Haunted by nightmares and stripped of her identity, she’s retreated to Wolf Haven, the no-man’s land where she found refuge years before. But while she might want to hide away from the rest of the world, the rest of the world isn’t taking the hint.

Dragged kicking and screaming back into life, Kit is thrust head-first into an investigation surrounding the theft of an ancient relic…one that she wants nothing to do with. Her instincts tell her it’s a bad idea to just leave the relic lying about, but finding it might be just as bad.

Forced to face her nightmares, she uncovers hidden strength and comes face to face with one of the world’s original monsters.
If she survives the job, she won’t be the same…and neither will those closest to her.

Excerpt:

I knew the weight of a weapon in my hand.

Even at sixteen, broken, battered and bloodied. I knew what it was to hold a weapon and realize that I had to fight or be destroyed.

Those last moments were nothing but a blur, but it was a blur of silver and blade and blood.

I left the guards dead in the snow, taking their packs and fleeing into the night, certain my grandmother would seek me out. And all the while as I ran, the blade had whispered to me. I am here now. I am here…

Reaching out, I touched her hilt and drew her from the sheath and stared at the gleaming, liquid length of silver.

"You're not here now."

If ever there had been a time when I needed her, it had been when I was trapped up on that mountain. Broken, desperate.

But she hadn't answered my call.

And she couldn't come to my hand now, either.

Stroking my fingers down the blade, I closed my eyes…and wished.

Then I turned back to my weapons trunk and went about getting myself ready.

Just what did you take to the party when you were dealing with some ancient, psychotic evil who unleashed holy hell just for the fun of it?

Word Count: 50,000

Blurb
Love
Destiny
and War
Created by the First Born, The Night Touched created the bloodlines from which all modern day vampires descended. Different because of their incredible powers and advantages in the human world, The Night Touched were a special kind of vampire. However, they were believed to have died out centuries ago, and had been reduced to little more than whispers in the vampire world.

Until now.

Harper Kemp was the only modern Night Touched in existence. The reasons behind her creation were unknown and she had been abandoned during her change. Eventually she was found by Lily and Jason and taught how to handle what she had become. She learned how to blend in with the human world and even made herself in to quite the socialite of the New York City elite scene.

After a plea for help in her dreams and the dangers of a forbidden love, Harper is sent down a path to discovery; not only is she not alone, she’s about to face her worst nightmare – a devastatingly handsome slayer named Silas with a finger on her non existent pulse.

Excerpt:

As the song came to an end, he spun me out and smiled. I felt like I was floating. As the next song started, he led me out into the hallway and towards the stairwell. I giggled to myself and followed as we sprinted down the long hall. He opened the door for me and I walked in.

He pushed me back against the wall and kissed me passionately. His strong hands held me and he stood with his body pressed against mine. I kissed back against his soft lips and pushed myself to him. My bun had worked itself loose and my long brown hair cascaded around my shoulders He ran his fingers through it as I resisted the urge to bite his lip. He grunted a little and it was so amazingly sexy. I sighed and tried to remember how to make it look like I was panting.

Suddenly I felt that old familiar tingle in my chest. Fuck! Not now. Please not right now. I did everything I could to make sure that he wouldn’t be able to see my mark glowing through my dress. Before it could even become that big of an issue, his phone rang.

“Hello?” He pulled back and answered, mouthing to me that it was his work. “Really? Okay, I’m on my way.” He hung up and shoved his phone into his pocket.

“Harper, I am so so sorry, but I have to go. I promise I will make it up to you.” He threw the door open and rushed out of the stair well.

“That’s okay, I was about to eat you anyway.” I said to myself leaning back against the wall and looking at the ground.

After about a minute the door opened and I looked up, hoping that it was Silas coming back to kiss me like that again. Jason stuck his head in and looked around before noticing me in the corner.

“Come on, it’s time to go.” He looked at me, confused. Then, like a light bulb going off, his eyebrows raised and a sly smile appeared on his face “What were you doing in the stairwell?”

“Practicing great self-restraint” I took my wrap from him and put it around my shoulders.
